Main Street School students collect items for hurricane victims

November 14, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

Main Street School students are doing their part in making a difference in the world by collecting items for the victims of hurricanes Irma and Maria, which devastated communities in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean islands. They’ve been collecting a variety of items from Oct. 31 through Nov. 9.

“As a school community we are being global citizens and we are collecting necessary items,” Principal Joyce Chapnick said. “There are many people still living without electricity and clean water, and they are in need of many items, including care for babies.”

The students have been collecting items, such as diapers, baby food, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, towels, batteries, flashlights, first aid supplies, garbage bags and more. The relief efforts are led by 36 fourth-graders and 15 fifth-graders who felt compelled to help when they learned about the devastating impact of the hurricanes. They presented to their peers why it’s important to get involved and made daily reminders about the donations.

“We can help make a difference,” Chapnick said. “The student leaders will pack everything up on Nov. 14 to be donated.”
